Second Empire Gaming Table

This Cuban mahogany “flip top” gaming table dates from the 1820s. During a previous restoration, damage to the original veneered top was repaired with Honduran or bay mahogany patches, which are much coarser in grain and lighter in color. After sanding down the top, a seal coat of amber shellac was applied. The patches were blended in to match the surrounding mahogany with powdered pigments mixed with lacquer, followed by several light coats of translucent toner. The top was then finished with several coats of lacquer and waxed and buffed to a high shine.
