Walnut Table Top Veneer Repair
A beautiful tabletop with quarter-matched American walnut veneer had suffered severe water damage. The glue had dissolved, and the veneer was badly warped. The owner did not believe it could be restored, but brought it to Capital Restoration “just in case.”
Two restorers worked together to gently lift the brittle veneer and apply hide glue beneath it using spatulas. The tabletop was then clamped overnight in a veneer press to ensure a tight bond with the wood substrate.
After filling a few small areas of missing veneer, the surface was hand-sanded with fine sandpaper. The tabletop was sealed, and a restorer carefully blended the filled areas using artist’s colors. Several coats of satin lacquer returned the walnut to its former beauty.
